Severe flooding kills many in Nepal
The flooding has also caused landslides and damaged bridges in parts of the country, which is situated in the Himalayan mountain range
At least 192 people have now been confirmed dead as a result of intense flooding in Nepal, which has been ongoing since 27 September.
A further 111 people have sustained flood-related injuries, according to a statement by the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs reported in India’s The Hindu newspaper.
The rain-triggered floods have blocked roads across Nepal, particularly in the eastern and central regions, with many people still missing or stranded due to landslides. This includes the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu, whose river, the Bagmati, has burst its banks.
A total of 16 bridges across the country have also been damaged.
Government-led search and rescue operations are underway – across all operations by the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, over 4,000 people have now been rescued. Among them, 162 people were airlifted to safety by army helicopters.
Elsewhere, Hurricane Helene has killed over 90 people in parts of the US.
