The CDC recommends that holidaymakers make an appointment with a healthcare provider at least one month in advance of their trip in order to obtain the necessary vaccines, medicines and health advice.
Another pre-travel tip is for travellers to pack a travel health kit containing prescriptions, first aid supplies and their health insurance card. In addition, the CDC reminds travellers that it is important they check whether their health insurance covers medical care abroad as, if it doesn’t, they may wish to purchase additional travel health insurance.
Tips that travellers can apply during their trip include: preventing insect bites by using insect repellant; eating and drinking safely; protecting themselves from hot temperatures and sun exposure; and avoiding close contact with animals. Importantly, if travellers do fall ill during or after their trip, it is important to seek medical attention and inform their healthcare provider of where they have travelled.
