Lombok earthquake kills 14
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Lombok on the morning of 29 July. More than 160 people were injured, 14 killed, and thousands of homes were damaged. One of those killed was a Malaysian tourist who was hiking to Mount Rinjani, which has since been closed due to landslides. Tremors from the earthquake have been felt in the nearby island of Bali, another popular tourist destination.
Spokesman for the Indonesia’s disaster agency Sutopo Purqo Nugroho told reporters that the focus of the rescue teams is on evacuation of the injured – most casualties were the result of falling debris from collapsing buildings.
