Kathmandu plane crash tragedy
A small passenger aircraft carrying 14 people, including five US nationals and one Japanese tourist, crashed after taking off from Kathmandu airport in heavy rain. There were no survivors from the accident, according to one witness, who said the plane broke up into pieces upon impact. The remaining passengers were Nepalese, said Tri Ratna Manandhar, head of the Nepalese Civil Aviation Authority. The plane went down around 50 miles south of Kathmandu after the crewmembers decided the weather was too bad to fly and tried to turn back to Kathmandu airport. Police chief Ram Bahadur Shrestha said that rescuers were finding it difficult to access the crash site due to its remoteness – the area has no proper roads and is only accessible by foot, while the best route from the nearest town is blocked by a flooded river. Continuing rain and bad weather is making any rescue effort almost impossible.
