GoCompare highlights lack of winter sports cover
UK comparison site GoCompare is urging travellers heading on winter sports breaks to check the terms of their cover after recent research found that only 16 per cent of annual travel insurance policies offer winter sports cover as standard.
The company looked at 1,154 annual travel insurance policies offered through 234 providers, and 59 packaged bank accounts, and found that the cover available often does not provide protection for an accident on the slopes.
In fact, the research showed that 84 per cent of annual multi-trip policies do not include winter sports cover as standard. On 78 per cent of such policies, it is offered as an optional extra, but on six per cent of policies, there is no such cover or the ability to upgrade. Of the 59 bank accounts looked at, just 59 per cent offered winter sports cover as standard on the annual travel insurance provided as an added benefit of the account.
GoCompare highlighted that the average cost for treatment of a winter sports injury is approximately £1,200; the average cost of a mountain rescue is approximately £2,350; and the average cost of an air ambulance from Europe to the UK is approximately £12,000.
