Global demand for air travel soars
A recent report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has shown that, compared with July 2015, global demand for air travel has grown by 5.9 percent in July 2016. According to IATA, this equates to a faster rate than the previous five months, and the increase applies to every region.
IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said that ‘demand was stimulated by lower fares which, in turn, were supported by lower oil prices,’ and that ‘near-record-high load factors demonstrate that people want to travel’.
While demand growth on domestic routes has stalled, seeing the lowest growth rate in 19 months, according to IATA, demand on international routes increased by 7.1 per cent in July 2016 compared with July 2015. IATA said that, at 4.1 per cent, demand growth was lowest among European carriers and stated that this was in part due to recent terrorist attacks.
