Two people are dead and five more missing after a small motor boat collided with a cruise ship on the Danube river north of Budapest, Hungary
The collision, which occurred on Saturday 18 May, was confirmed in a police statement the following day.
Eight adults were reportedly onboard the motor boat at the time of the collision, and a total of 95 personnel and 25 vessels and drones have been dispatched to search for the missing five people.
According to Reuters, the accident was reported on Saturday night after a man was found with a bleeding head wound on the side of the main road by the river near Veroce, approximately 55km north of the Hungarian capital.
The body of a man was recovered south of Veroce, while a woman’s body was found downstream by a bridge in northern Budapest – where the damaged boat was also found.
The police also discovered that a Swiss cruise ship, the Heidelberg – which had been moored in Komarom – displayed large scratches on the bow.
The Hungarian police have now launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident, and whether anyone is criminally liable.
