EU to use digital Covid-19 certificate
The EU is introducing a digital Covid-19 certificate in all member states from 1 July, in time for the lifting of travel restrictions within the 27 territories
The certificate, which will also be available in paper form, shows whether a person has been vaccinated, received a negative test result or recovered from Covid-19.
The European Commission said in a statement: “When travelling, the EU digital Covid Certificate holder should in principle be exempted from free movement restrictions.”
A digital gateway to travel
The EU has built a digital gateway so that all EU countries’ certificate ‘signatures’ can be accessed and verified through the platform.
“The certificate is an opportunity for member states to adjust the existing restrictions on public health grounds,” a spokesperson said.
Restrictions would ‘be amended by mid-June with a view to the holiday season’ the Commission added. And it looks like there is optimism about travel when borders reopen according to a report by the International Air Transport Association.
