Driving away from home for Christmas
Co-op Insurance has found in a new survey that over one-third of UK adults will be going away for the festive period.
According to its findings, Europe is the top destination for UK travellers during the period, with 35 per cent heading onto the continent. North America is also popular, with 15 per cent heading there, while 26 per cent will be heading somewhere within the UK.
Festive holidays seem popular with UK travellers with 44 per cent having gone away during the period before, and a further 22 per cent saying they would consider it. The dour UK weather is one of the top reasons given for to get away from the UK, according to 16 per cent of those leaving. A further eight per cent get away to try to escape the omnipotent Christmas cheer, while another eight per cent aim to escape their family. However, 20 per cent get away to get closer to their families, whilst 11 per cent simply prefer to celebrate abroad.
Younger travellers are increasingly looking to get away during this period according to Co-op’s research, with 64 per cent of those aged between 25 and 34 getting away, 41 per cent of which were making the most of heading to Europe before Brexit.
“A quarter of UK adults believe that they don’t need insurance for breaks in the UK,” said Colin Butler, Head of Travel Insurance at Co-op. “However, travel insurance will be able to save disappointments and money being lost when it comes to things like unexpected cancellations and travel delays which are always a risk, especially at Christmas.”
