Boozy Brits ignore their policy

Over half of British tourists expect to be covered if they injure themselves after drinking alcohol on a night out abroad, new research from UK-based consumer information firm Travel Insurance Explained has found. Nearly three-quarters of Brits admit to drinking more alcohol whilst abroad – on average seven glasses of beer or wine, compared to an average of four whilst at home – but 76 per cent did not think to check their policy for alcohol related restrictions.

Fiona Macrae from Travel Insurance Explained commented on the findings: “It’s understandable that UK holidaymakers like to drink more alcohol when going on holiday abroad, and while drinking alcohol is fine in moderation, people need to watch how much they drink, particularly in a country they are unfamiliar with, as excessive alcohol consumption can put you in dangerous situations or lead to accidents. It’s important to remember that some policies will not cover you if your blood alcohol level exceeds 0.19 per cent – that’s approximately four pints or four standard glasses of wine, and some are even more restrictive.”

Macrae further warned travellers of the dangers, adding: “So, if you’re going away this season, check the alcohol clause on your travel insurance policy and if you are going to be toasting in the New Year with a glass of champagne, make sure you have a policy that will cover you.”
