AXA XL appoints Sean McGovern
Sean McGovern will, pending regulatory approval, take on the role of CEO for the UK and Lloyd’s market
Sean has already been carrying out the role’s associated duties on an interim basis, but it has now been decided that the position will be made permanent. He joined AXA in 2016, and as well as leading the Group’s claims, legal and compliance, and regulatory and government affairs functions, he was also key to the merger of AXA Corporate Solutions, AXA Matrix, AXA Art and XL Catlin and the subsequent formation of AXA XL.
Prior to joining AXA, he held various roles with Lloyd’s of London, including becoming its first Chief Risk Officer in 2014. He first joined Lloyd’s in 1996 from Clifford Chance, and in 2002 was appointed a director and General Counsel, taking on responsibility for its global legal, regulatory and government affairs; this in-depth experience, AXA XL believes, will be essential in terms of discharging his new duties as CEO for the UK and the Lloyd’s market.
“Sean’s deep understanding of AXA XL’s business, coupled with his significant knowledge and experience of the London and Lloyd’s market, position him ideally to lead our UK and Lloyd’s presence,” said Scott Gunter, CEO of AXA XL. “Over the course of the last few months, Sean has proven his ability to put our clients and brokers at the heart of what we do and to balance strategic thinking with the day-to-day requirements needed to fulfil this important leadership position.
“Sean’s appointment is a key step as we assemble the right team to drive AXA XL forward. Our new regional CEOs and structure will make us a simpler organisation to navigate, meaning that decisions can be made faster in country and we can continue to serve our clients to the very best of our ability.”
