Alleged over-diagnosis in UAE
According to Emirates 24/7, some private healthcare providers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been over-diagnosing patients with comprehensive IPMI plans. As a result, the UAE news outlet has warned individuals to be wary when they seek treatment, as a minor condition could be overdiagnosed in order for a provider to take advantage of patients’ insurance and charge for expensive treatments that are ultimately medically unnecessary. The publication admits that its evidence is anecdotal, making it difficult to prove widespread abuse, but insurance providers are reportedly alarmed by the rising cost of healthcare in the UAE, so are looking into individual cases where concerned patients’ emotions have been played on, for example, or where problems have been diagnosed that never even existed. The Dubai Health Authority has announced that it will start regulating services provided by private hospitals in order to clamp down on issues including over-treatment and fraud.
