Venice to expand visitor charge to 54 days
Venice will double the number of days on which tourists will have to pay an entry fee to visit the city, in the Italian region of Veneto
Day visitors who book ahead will have to pay €5 to access the city on some days during the peak April–July season from next year. This fee will rise to €10 per person if they book less than four days in advance.
A total of 54 days will see the charge applied in 2025, including every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 18 April and 27 July. It will also be applied on a number of public holidays during the period.
This represents a significant increase in the number of days covered compared with the trial period in 2024, where payment was required on 29 days.
All visitors over the age of 14 are required to pay the fee. Tickets will be checked at random at common arrival areas, and those without a ticket risk being fined.
Those with hotel and guest house reservations will be exempt from the charge, as will Veneto region residents; students at the University of Venice; and those visiting relatives in the city.
The entrance fee is intended to discourage overtourism in the city, and encourage visitors to go to Venice on less busy days.
The fee is the latest measure introduced by Venice to combat the issue of overtourism. The city has banned cruise ships from docking in its centre since 2021 due to concerns about pollution, erosion, and flooding.
Overtourism was also the driving force behind protests in Spain’s Canary Islands earlier this month.
