Fatal landslides kill many in South Ethiopia
At least 229 people have been killed in two landslides in the mountainous Gofa area of southern Ethiopia
The landslides, which occurred on the evening of 21 July and the morning of 22 July, followed a period of heavy rain.
After the first landslide occurred, rescuers from nearby villages began search and rescue operations, but were then buried under mud from the second landslide.
While rescue teams have so far retrieved the bodies of 229 people, local authorities have stated that the “death toll could yet increase”.
Speaking to the BBC, Dagmawi Ayele, Chief Administrator of the Goza zone, also confirmed that least 10 people have also been rescued alive, and have been sent to hospital for treatment.
At least 85 people were also killed in flooding earlier this year in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
